April 30 — The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE), the Texas Exes Asian Alumni Network and the Center for Asian American Studies welcomed alumni and community members at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center at the 3rd Annual Asian American Community Leadership Awards Ceremony. Every year, these awards recognize outstanding individuals and organizations in Central Texas, and this year’s theme “Business Leaders Building Stronger Communities” honored Asian American business leaders who serve and advocate for Asian Texan communities.
This year’s Community Partnership Award went to the Texas Asian Chamber of Commerce for its leading work in business development in Central Texas since 1996. Two Community Leadership Circle Awards honored Tommy Hodinh and Dr. Foo Swasdee for their individual business accomplishments and community contributions. Hodinh is the chairman and CEO of MagRabbit, a company that has provided global software service, supply chain management, and work force solutions for over 20 years. Dr. Swasdee ...

To Texas Exes Asian Alumni Members:
My name is Hang Phan, and I am a graduate student at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. I am currently conducting a study looking at mental health care within the Vietnamese young adult population, which can hopefully lead to improved mental health services for this population. If you are (1) Vietnamese, (2) between the ages of 18 and 30, and (3) can read and write in English, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take fifteen minutes of your time to fill out the following survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5686RHN
Those who complete the survey will be given the chance to enter in a raffle for a $50 Starbucks gift card. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to hangt.phan@utsouthwestern.edu.
If you know others who would be eligible for the study, please ask for their participation as well.

1. What is your favorite memory, tradition, or thing about your time at UT?
I love going to Gone to Texas every year. There is such great energy during this event with so many new students who are being introduced to the traditions at UT and it is awesome to see their excitement in being part of the UT community. One of my other favorite events at UT is to go to the Diwali Celebration that is hosted by the Hindu Student Council every year and watching the fireworks and the celebration reminds me of celebrating Diwali as a child in India.

New research and the disaggregation of achievement data have begun to debunk the “model minority myth” that portrays Asian American and Pacific Islander students as a homogenous group of high achievers. Educational outcomes for this group of students differ according to ethnicity, socioeconomic status, parental education, immigration status and language. Additionally, a recent College Board report indicates that that immigrant Asian/Pacific Islander girls have positive attitudes about education in the U.S. due to perceived opportunities for gender equality, while boys perceive a loss of status in the U.S. because “they lack qualities associated with the form of masculinity most often valued in U.S. society.” The second session of the Sweatt Symposium will focus on The Asian American Male Experience. Come listen to three notable researchers and scholars discuss the challenges facing Asian American and Pacific Islander males ...
