		<description><![CDATA[Awareness to Action: Advancing Solutions for Men of Color in Higher Education

 The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement is pleased to announce the schedule for The University of Texas at Austin&#8217;s 26th Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights. This year&#8217;s topic is &#8220;Awareness to Action: Advancing Solutions for Men of Color in Higher Education.&#8221;
A 2010 report published by the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center has generated a growing focus on males underrepresented in institutions of higher education and the obstacles they encounter as they navigate the educational system in the United States. In response to the report, this year&#8217;s symposium will bring together scholars and practitioners from across the country to discuss the latest research, solutions and model programs for increasing the number of men of color successfully completing a degree in higher education. Each  summer, CAPAL places over 10 summer interns in the federal government.  These internship positions are open to ALL MAJORS, and are suited for  individuals looking to gain real-world federal government experience.  CAPAL has partnerships with federal agencies including Agricultural  Research Services, Forest Service, and Rural Development.
Each  CAPAL intern will be awarded a $2,000 stipend to support the successful  completion of his/her internship. Up to $500 travel stipends are  available. Depending on interests and placement, duties could vary from  policy or scientific research, project coordination and management,  business, law, communication, and more. Applicants are asked to specify  their preferences on the application, and those selected will be placed  based on their interests and skills. Agricultural knowledge is not  required. 		<description><![CDATA[Andrew is a tech entrepreneur and startup founder in the San  Francisco Bay Area, and is passionate about buildings products that  solve fundamental problems. He previously held roles in product  management at Yahoo!, private equity at Huntsman Gay, and strategy  consulting at McKinsey. He holds a J.D. from Harvard, a B.A. in Plan II  and History from UT-Austin where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and  was a J. William Fulbright Scholar to China where he shot a documentary  film about rural education development with the Zigen Fund, a non-profit  organization. A Texas native, Andrew enjoys searching for great BBQ in  his spare time, reading history and biographies, strumming his acoustic  guitar, and sharpening his skills in interaction and product design. He  regularly reads and has been most influenced by  the entrepreneurship writings of Paul Graham, Eric Ries, and Ben  Horowitz.

The University of Texas at Austin invites nominations for the 2012 Asian American Community Leadership Awards to honor individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities, preferably in Central Texas. This year’s theme, “Business Leaders Building Stronger Communities,” aims to recognize Asian American business leaders who serve and advocate for Asian Texan communities. This ceremony will honor and celebrate the history and accomplishments of Asians who enrich and transform the culture, society and economy of this state, shepherding its progress toward a more diverse and prosperous future.

		<description><![CDATA[AUSTIN, TEXAS – The evening of December 16, 2011 marked a new tradition for UT’s Asian American community as alumni convened at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center for the very first Texas Exes Asian Alumni Network Winter Reunion. Festive lights and holiday music set the scene at the Connally Banquet Hall as over seventy attendees mingled and dined over fine food and drinks. The Winter Reunion is a reception that honors one exemplary alum for outstanding community contributions. All proceeds from the event benefit the Texas Exes Asian Alumni Network Scholarship.
For 2011, TEAAN recognized the personal achievements of Dr. Mitchel Wong of Austin Eye for his innovative work in ophthalmology and long-standing legacy in Austin, Texas. 		<description><![CDATA[The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in  Washington, D.C., offers part-time and full-time internships during  spring and fall semesters and full-time internships during the summer.   Part-time applicants who can commit to at least 20 hours a week will be  considered during the spring and fall semesters.  Interns at the  Initiative are responsible for assisting the staff in researching a wide  range of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) issues, including  education, health, sustainable neighborhoods, economic development,  civil rights, and labor and employment.  In addition, interns will help  write policy memos and proposals, coordinate events, and conduct  outreach to national and local AAPI organizations, elected officials,  and ethnic media outlets.
