Be the Match at the Dragon Boat Festival: Join the Registry

Join the Texas Exes Asian Alumni Network, Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic Council, and Be the Match for a bone marrow registry drive on Saturday, April 30, 2011 during Austin’s annual Dragon Boat Festival. We will have a table at the annual Dragon Boat Festival for you to come by and register for the bone marrow registry before or after enjoying the festivities. Joining the registry is simple. Donors fill out a form and complete a cheek swap sample. Be the Match will have a representative from the National Marrow Donor Program to answer any questions regarding bone marrow donation. Plus, the Dragon Boat Festival will have dance, music, and food for you to enjoy. So come be a donor and have fun doing so!

Date: Saturday, April 30th, 2011
Time: 11-3 p.m.
Location: Northeast Corner IH35 and Lady Bird Lake (Dragon Boat Festival location)
Admission: Free

Your heritage can save lives. Every day, thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases hope for a marrow donor who can make their transplant possible. Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their racial and ethnic background. Those of Asian, South Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander descent can have a harder time finding a donor than others. Today, all Asian groups combined reflect only 7 percent of the registry as a whole.

“It’s absolutely critical that people of every ethnic group and heritage join the registry because you’re most likely to find a match within your own ancestry.” -Dr. Jeffrey Chell, CEO, National Marrow Donor Program, Be the Match.
