On December 4th, 2009, the Vietnamese Students Association (VSA) at The University of Texas at Austin hosted their 5th annual Culture Showcase – showcasing the unique Vietnamese culture through Vietnamese music, fashion, and food.

Each year, VSA provides a culturally rich experience for its members as well as the UT-Austin community for an admission fee of $0.  Yes, you read right. For free, you can enjoy delicious Vietnamese food, listen to talented individuals perform Vietnamese songs, and view a large array of beautiful, Vietnamese áo dài. Each Culture Showcase starts with the singing of the American National Anthem followed by the Vietnamese National Anthem.

VSA’s Culture Chair, Vivienne Hoang, dedicates her time to spreading Vietnamese culture and awareness on campus. She hopes that attendees have “gained more appreciation of the Vietnamese culture” and would like to encourage Vietnamese students to “keep traditions alive to be able to pass them along to future generations.”

With almost 200 attendees, this year’s Culture Showcase succeeded in spreading Vietnamese culture to students of all different backgrounds. In addition, unique to this year’s show was an authentic documentary from an orphanage in Vietnam – showing hardships in Vietnam and touching the hearts of many members.

The show reminds VSA member, Thien-An Nguyen, of “watching Paris By Night with [his] parents and their beliefs in the significance of retaining culture as a Vietnamese-American.” Huy Pham, who has performed in the show for 3 years, feels Culture Showcase challenges his outlet for creativity by “adding a Vietnamese twist to [his] performances.” Not only do viewers gain knowledge of Vietnamese culture from the show; performers learn important lessons as well.
